Body Sculpting - The Adonis Complex

The obsession with male body sculpting has been blamed on the rise of near naked male bodies being flaunted in magazines, TV and film.

It's been dubbed the 'Adonis complex' - a preoccupation with body sculpting in order to attain the look of a Greek god. With the likes of David Beckham reclining in his underwear flaunting his rippling muscles on advertising billboards across the UK, it's not surprising more men are starting to consider body sculpting as part of their daily beauty regime. If it isn't Beckham, it's Bond. James Bond used to be a generally athletic figure, but in the shape of Daniel Craig, he's morphed into being more attractive than any Bond girl, emerging from the sea in tight blue trunks. In fact, it seems scantily clad women in adverts and film seem to be rather passée. The fact is body sculpting is nothing new for the female population. Women have dieted, exercised and tried every which way to achieve the ideal body. The likes of Madonna have long been a fan of muscle toning equipment such as vibration plates and macrobiotic diets. But now men are feeling the pressure. A feature into the Adonis complex in the Times newspaper said that Daniel Craig emerging from the sea reinforced what has been emerging into the mainstream for years: “It's gorgeous, pouting guys who are the current hot thing. Especially with their kit off.”

Body Sculpting and Male Body Anxiety

Achieving a toned, fit body for men or women can boost confidence in all walks of life. But not everybody has the time or energy to commit to the intense work out Hollywood stars and pop queens subject themselves to. Using vibration plates is an increasingly popular trend for the time-starved gym-goer to help achieve a more intense work out, fast. It seems, no matter how sophisticated, rich or clever men are, there's still a desire for them to look good in the buff. Many women may simply feel men are at the receiving end of what women have endured for decades. The reality is more men are undergoing body angst seeking out body sculpting techniques - in America it's been estimated men spend an average of $5 billion a year on male grooming products. But this male crisis is serious. Getting a great body through diet and exercise and using training equipment such as vibration plates is good for fitness and health, but some men are going to extremes. Pumping too much iron, eating disorders, steroids and drugs are increasingly dangerous manifestations of the male beauty obsession.
